Most people categorize skiing as an extreme sport but we here at adventurerspace are on the hunt for that sort of activity and we call it adventurous. If you are into adventure sports, you need the right material to arm yourselves from the elements. This is where Mammut comes in. Honestly, this is a brand that appears to be a bit hidden amongst giants such as The North Face, Marmot, Arc’teryx etc. Mammut ski pants aren’t exactly budget friendly yet they are gaining an increasing popularity within the skiing community. So why are they special and any different from the rest? Find out in this post where we review some of their best skiing pants for both Men and Women.
Mammut Haldigrat HS Men’s Pant
- Material: [membrane/laminate] DRYtechnology Pro (3-layer), [face fabric] 100% nylon 66 [panels] 85% nylon, 15% elastane
- 590 g of weight and 40Dx40D denier material
- Waterproof Rating: 20,000mm
- Fully sealed seams
- Breathability Rating: 20,000g/mA2
- Barryvox-compatible beacon pocket with loop inside
- Dyneema-reinforced seam edges protect against ski edges and crampons
The material utilized is nothing extraordinary for those of you who are familiar with outdoor apparel clothing. When comparing Polyester and Nylon, the latter is stronger, more elastic and durable than polyester. It is also more soft and smooth. Elastane more commonly known as Spandex is used to enhance the moisture wicking ability of Nylon to keep you dry and warm amidst the snow. They are more elastic than Nylon and also highly breathable. The weight is not too bad, the bib keeps snow out and the pockets are sufficient to host your accessories. So how is the general feedback looking?
Users are mostly complimenting the lightweight nature allowing them to be worn for long hours. Plus the removable neoprene bib is also quite handy because you can remove it when it gets too hot. Majority feedback is that the waterproof rating claim is legitimate. One customer who used these pants for 3 winters exclusively for backcountry skiing and touring claims that the pants are still in good condition. The only issue was with the zippers where one of the leg vent zippers and a pocket zipper had broken. But that was just one user. There were also the usual minor complaints about the sizing with the shoulder straps. All considered, you are in for a great deal if you maintain the product right.
Mammut Stoney HS Pants
- Outer Material: 100% Polyamide; Membrane: 100% Polyurethane
- Zipper closure
- Wind and waterproof 2-layer MAMMUT DRYtechnology Pro material
- Waistband adjustment- can be adjusted from the outside
- Side ventilation with splashproof zipper
- Elastic snow gaiters
Another high quality product in the ski pants category by Mammut. Same technology to keep the snow out and you warm. The Mammut’s DRYtechnology Pro waterproof and breathable membrane is actually more softer than the most commonly used Gore-Tex material but performs on the same level. However, some users mentioned that it lacks a little in the warmth department according to the users. Reason being the comparatively thin shell. But the fact remains that you can use these pants on a multi-day ski tour in the toughest winter conditions in the Nordic regions and on a regular autumn day too. The bib is perfectly capable of preventing any snow entering inside from above. Plus you can remove it at the waistline with the zipper.
Another feature that everyone compliments is the stretchy nature of the material enabling unrestricted mobility while keeping your body sheltered from the elements. Compared to Gore-Tex, the material is definitely more stretchy and fits the waist, quads and the thighs perfectly, even if you have large quads. For any type of clothing, sizing is the hardest to achieve and the Mammut Stoney Hard shell pants passed that barrier effortlessly. Seems like being stretchy is a signature of Mammut ski pants. Tall people especially love this feature. Of course we cannot forget the Dyneema scuff guards stiff enough to protect you from sharp ski edges without adding too much weight. Pockets are in the right places with enough space to keep your equipment. Ventilation is ample throughout the pants amplified due to the thin material. Overall, you are in for a good deal that most other ski pants don’t provide at this price range.
Mammut Tatramar Pant – Women’s
- Outer Material: 86% Polyester, 14% Elastane; Membrane: 100% Polyurethane
- Weight: 640g
- Elastic, robust and water-repellent softshell material with membrane
- Special wide waistband adjustment- can be adjusted from outside
- Edge and crampon protection made from durable Cordura material
- Integrated, adjustable gaiters
- Side ventilation with zipper and mesh-lined snow protection
One of the best Mammut ski pants for Women. This is basically the same ski pants we discussed already with a few minor changes. Slightly heavier and a different composition in materials yet the same functionality. Same stretchy fabric for better mobility while venting off the snow using the water repellant lining. Integrated gaiters secure around your boots to prevent deep snow from getting in especially during the ascend. Not to mention the reinforced scuff guards to protect your ankles from ski edges.
Honestly, we could not find any serious complaints whatsoever about these ski pants other than it being a bit too tight in the waist region. So order a bigger size I guess. A mother of four, who ordered size 10 claims that the pants are a great fit with the exception at the waist area, breathable and the zippers are all in the right spots. The velcro ankle feature is really handy for her as she is living in the mountains amidst strong winds and snowy winters. She uses them for all sorts of outdoor activities in the snow including but not limited to outdoor play and chores. There is a slight conflict with the sizing. For example, a 5’8.5, 135 lbs user ordered size 6 regular. However, it was a little tight at the thighs and short, so the long version is the better choice. Some customers even claim that these pants are high-performance, warm material for Nordic skiing or winter hiking despite them being softshell. In conclusion, the pants are pretty versatile, comfortable, protects you from the cold and snow and quite stylish too.
