If you are interested in sunrise or sunset photography, the Kingscote Jetty awaits you at the Nepean Bay which is also available for fishing. The Independence Trail is a walking trail starting at the boatramp in American River and trails along the coastline of Pelicans Lagoon. Total distance is 3.6km up to Independence Point. The place is called the Independent Point to acknowledge the schooner Independence. The schooner was manufactured in 1803 by the crew of the visiting American sealing ship the Union and it is the first ever ship built in South Australia.

The American River too gets the name from the American sailors who helped build the ship.
