We’ve spoken about “Marmot” plenty of times before and we have seen how they’ve added value to the industry of outdoor clothing through their high end apparels. They are of course not without challenging competition and Mammut here is a pioneer in that. Since this is our first review on a Mammut product, let us introduce who they are first and then proceed with the review of the Mammut Eigerjoch hooded jacket.
Who Are Mammut?
To Create A World Moved By Mountains is the theme of this Swiss founded mountaineering and trekking company. Kaspar Tanner is the renowned founder of this prestigious company way back in 1862 in the town of Lenzburg, Switzerland. What motivated him rather? Well, that information remains undisclosed. But of course one can guess he himself could have been a passionate climber, spending years in the Swiss Alps. After the initial stage, it became a multinational company after different acquisitions such as Raichle. Presently, Mammut is said to have more than 400 employees worldwide with many locations worldwide with headquarters based in Memmingen, Germany.
Mammut keeps faith on the fact that “mountains move people like no other place on Earth. That is why our purpose is to create products that enable all outdoor enthusiasts to experience the power of the mountains.” So what exactly is their product line? Just like most other apparel manufacturers, products range from clothing to footwear to hiking equipment. Sounds like there is quite a lot to review eh?
They’ve got jackets, vests, pants and tops in the clothing which isn’t all that exciting. But you definitely want to check on their equipment. Starting off from the traditional hiking backpacks all the way to harnesses, carabiners and avalanche equipment. Not to mention the footwear with a variety to choose from casual to mountaineering shoes.
Now that you’ve got an idea as to what Mammut is all about, let’s dive right into their signature Mammut Eigerjoch jacket. The version we will review here is the Mammut Eigerjoch advanced IN hooded jacket.

We will try to keep the technical jargon as minimum as possible. But you’ve got to have an understanding of what the material is and how it actually helps you keep warm and retain heat all while keeping you comfortable. As always let’s start off with the material. We have spoken about PrimaLoft® Gold before in our posts about down jackets. As the name suggests it offers the highest warmth to weight ratio of all PrimaLoft styles of insulation. It contains microfibers that retain body heat, maintain breathability and repel water. It also packs easily and is the softest PrimaLoft. Pertex® Diamond Fuse fabrics use yarns with unique diamond-shaped filaments. These filaments lock together to create a durable and highly abrasion resistant fabric. Pertex® Quantum uses a tightly woven structure to provide a light and soft fabric that allows insulation to fully loft.
Obviously on paper it looks high end and boasts a lot of technicality. It’s a whole other thing when it comes to the practical aspect of it. We will focus on all the pros and cons that the users have to say. Before that, let’s see if this jacket checks off the priority requirements of most outdoor apparels.
Comfort and Sizing
We’ve already clarified what the Mammut Eigerjoch offers in the warmth department. When it comes to sizing, it is a slim fit with hip length. Sizes range from small to XXL. Getting the right size doesn’t seem to have been an issue for most users. Users who are 6’2” ordered the large size and claims that the jacket never restricted motion and fit quite well. No complaints on the weight either. Customers also mentioned that the hood is perfectly adequate for covering a climbing helmet and is easily adjustable. A customer who is 5’10” and weighs 175lbs mentioned that he had no issues with his purchase after purchasing the size chart. The inner pockets are deep enough to hold quite a few handy accessories.
Customer Feedback
There was absolutely no negative feedback to be found about the Mammut Eigerjoch jacket in terms of performance, comfort, extra features and durability. Users have worn this jacket to ski, hike, climb and even in construction with no wear and tear issues. A customer who used this on a winter camping trip in Northern Ontario claims that the hood functionality is excellent due to the great synch at the back that keeps you sheltered during strong wind gusts. The highlight of this jacket is the constant warmth among varying cold environment conditions. Its ability to retain heat, keep you comfortable, not to limit your mobility level all at the same time is quite remarkable. It is specially recommended for wide shouldered folk. Not a single complaint by the buyers for restrictions in mobility. On top of all these, it has a great design and nice slim fit shape as well. So how’s the price tag with all these features? Well, it is pretty hefty but more than justified.
